If you want to design a Web site so that you can see what it looks like while you're building it, and yet you also want to tinker with its underlying code to get exactly the effects you want, you have two good choices: Microsoft's Expression Web, recently upgraded to version 2, and Adobe's Dreamweaver CS4 beta (It's a shame that there's no remotely comparable open-source choice; your Web server may be Linux-powered, but your Web design is likely to be running under Windows or the Mac). Both build up-to-the-minute standards-based sites based on Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), instead of the clumsy and inflexible formatting tags that got shoehorned into HTML back in the early years of the Web, and both make it reasonably easy to build dynamic sites driven by PHP or ASP.NET technology.
